PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – Pennsylvania health officials have confirmed that an unvaccinated 40-year-old Jefferson County woman died while infected with measles. She died on September 12 as the state confronted its largest measles outbreak in more than three decades. Laboratory testing detected the virus in a specimen collected from the woman. State officials classified the death as measles-associated after reviewing medical findings. Her case became Pennsylvania’s third measles-associated death of 2026 and added to concerns surrounding the growing number of infections across the state.

Pennsylvania measles cases hit 693 as death toll reaches four
Measles cases and hospitalizations continue across Pennsylvania during the 2026 outbreak.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office first reported that complications connected to a probable measles infection contributed to the woman’s death. Officials later received laboratory confirmation showing an active measles infection. The woman had not received a measles vaccine. Authorities did not identify her publicly, citing the family’s privacy. Her case occurred during an outbreak that has affected both children and adults. Measles can cause severe illness, particularly among people without immunity and those at greater risk of medical complications.

Pennsylvania recorded 693 confirmed measles cases across 38 counties as of September 14. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also reported 133 hospitalizations connected to the outbreak. Only four confirmed cases involved people considered appropriately vaccinated for their age. State figures show that most patients lacked full protection from the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. The outbreak has spread across multiple communities since cases began rising during the spring, creating one of the state’s most significant measles events in decades.

    Pennsylvania death toll reaches four

Health officials confirmed a fourth measles-associated death on September 15 involving an unvaccinated 18-year-old from Mifflin County. The county coroner determined that acute disseminated encephalomyelitis caused the teenager’s death. The condition is a rare neurological complication that can follow measles infection. Pennsylvania had already reported two measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County on August 25. Those earlier fatalities involved infants who were too young for routine vaccination. They marked Pennsylvania’s first measles-associated deaths in 35 years.

Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes. The virus can remain infectious in the air and on surfaces for as long as two hours. Common early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes. A rash usually appears several days later and often begins on the head before moving downward. Symptoms can develop between seven and 21 days after exposure. Health officials advise people with possible measles symptoms to contact a medical provider before arriving for treatment.

US measles cases continue to climb

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 3,294 confirmed measles cases nationwide in 2026 as of September 10. Forty-seven jurisdictions had reported cases by that date. Federal data also show lower MMR vaccination coverage among kindergarten students. Coverage fell to 92.4% during the 2025-2026 school year, down from 95.2% in 2019-2020. Public health authorities generally point to vaccination coverage above 95% as an important level for limiting sustained measles transmission within communities.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection against measles, according to public health guidance. The disease can cause pneumonia, brain swelling and other serious complications. Pennsylvania officials say nearly one in five identified patients in the current outbreak has required hospitalization. People who believe they were exposed should monitor for symptoms during the recommended period. Anyone who develops symptoms should call a health care provider before visiting a clinic or hospital so staff can take steps to reduce additional exposure.
